Robert Michael Picciolo (born February 4, 1953, in Santa Monica, California) is a former Major League Baseball player who currently serves as the bench coach of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He played nine seasons in the major leagues, from 1977–1985, for the Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, and California Angels, the predecessor of his current team. He was primarily a shortstop, but also played at third base and second base.
Picciolo was notorious for not drawing bases on balls. In 1,628 major league at bats, he walked only 25 times.
Picciolo is the longest-tenured coach in San Diego Padres history, serving 16 consecutive years between 1990 and 2005. From 2006-10, he served as the Angels' roving infield instructor.[1] He was named the Angels' bench coach on November 10, 2010.[1]
He has two sons, Breton and Dustin Picciolo. Both sons attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
